Australian qualifier Arina Rodionova has caused a boilover at the Adelaide International WTA tournament by downing American Sloane Stephens, while Ashleigh Barty beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets.
World No.201 Rodionova triumphed 6-2, 6-2 over an out-of-sorts Stephens, ranked 25 in the world, at Memorial Drive on Tuesday.
World No.1 Barty, gifted a first-round bye, initially struggled in the second-round fixture against the world No.31 before finding increasing touch ahead of the Australian Open starting on Monday in Melbourne.
She eventually beat the Russian 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Meanwhile in Hobart, Australia’s Lizette Cabrera notched one of the biggest wins of her career, beating former world No.4 Caroline Garcia in the first round of the Hobart International.
The 22-year-old Cabrera stunned the Frenchwoman 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a touch over two hours on Tuesday.
It was the second opening-round exit at Hobart in the space of two years for Garcia, who is currently ranked 46 in the world.
World No.129 Cabrera will next meet Kristyna Pliskova, the identical twin of world No.2 Karolina.
She is the sole Australian remaining in the tournament after Samantha Stosur and Astra Sharma were knocked out on Monday.
Hobart top seed Elise Mertens and two-time grand slam winner Garbine Muguruza begin their campaigns on Tuesday.
